The 3 pronged curler or the 3-4 triangular iron, if you said crimping irons then you're correct! A few of the designers Betsy Johnson, Monique LHuillier, and Thakoon to name a few, models displayed the '80s rave crimped hairstyles for their shows at the New York Fashion Week.
 
Will you be following in that direction?  I think it's a nice way to add body to your hair if you have the patience to crimp a full head of hair.  If so, I think it's time you rummaged through your drawer and looked for that crimping iron to get started. If you didn't have the tools then french braiding your hair after washing and towel drying when wet and leaving it overnight will create a similar effect.
